Carbonado – The Black Diamond

"Black diamonds" have recently been found on a large scale throughout the diamond jewelry industry. They are scientifically referred to as “Carbonado” and are now the most highly prized gemstone among business people and customers.

What is it made of?

The chemical component is actually that of a diamond polycrystalline whose form is impure, high-density, microporous and consists of diamond, graphite, and amorphous carbon, with minor crystalline precipitates filling pores and occasional reduced metal inclusions.

Where are they found?

They are only found in the alluvial deposits. The places of the origins are mainly in the mines of Central African Republic and Brazil. Though they were found 3 billion years ago, they are still procured from the young sedimentary rocks.

What makes it SPECIAL?

Black Diamonds are usually scratched and nicked, unlike the usual natural diamonds that shine and sparkle from afar. They don’t shine from the reflection of light, due to the opaque black color. Breaking the black diamond is a tiring and time consuming process and crediting to its extreme durability, it takes at least a year to cut it into the shape. They can, however, be crafted into various jewelries like pendants, rings, earrings, brooches and necklaces, which talk about is versatility. The cosmic association of this diamond signifies action, energy and passion which makes it a perfectly thoughtful gifting.

How black diamonds are treated?

Most of the treated black diamond that are sold for jewelry are altered to induced color. The color is grey at the start, there are heavy inclusions and fractures that are expose to low pressure/high temperature treatment. This results to in the fracture being graphitized which turns colorful diamonds into black.  There is a process of artificial irradiation in which a diamond is put through the radiation process to get its properties changed, high-energy particles are blasted at diamonds, knocking the carbon atoms out of their place and producing colored diamonds.

In recent times black diamonds are trending in men’s jewelry especially men’s eternity rings. Since black diamonds are opaque there is very less focus on the diamond’s grading and checking and hence it’s very cost friendly. A buyer with a budget can go for a black diamond as one can buy higher carat in dime a dozen. Instead of normal white diamonds several couples are selecting other colored diamond they want to be identified with rather than standard white diamonds for example Selena Gomez and Blake Lively have been spotted with them lately in various events like award shows.
